A journey into the American West

This autumn I am taking part in a field research program run by the University of New Mexico. The program includes undergraduate and post graduate fine art students. We spend over 50 nights in the field traveling over 8000 miles through New Mexico, Utah,Arizona and to the borders of Nevada and Texas. En route we will visit monumental earth works. We will use the desert landscape as a studio to live, work and learn.

A Time And A Place

Now in its second year, Place Projects is fast becoming an integral part of the Collective Gallery’s ever-expanding New Work Scotland Programme. The artist-led initiative aims to support emerging artists by developing a community in which constant dialogue leads to the creation of art. Places are coveted by recent graduates, eager to be nurtured by one of Scotland’s leading galleries and keen to collaborate with some of the country’s most talented up-and-coming artists.

In keeping with this spirit of the free exchange of ideas, The Journal spoke to Edinburgh College of Art (ECA) graduate Rachel MacLean and Glasgow School of Art alumnus Simon Gowing (SEA). Maclean and Gowing’s collaboration, The Principal Inhabitants of the Moon, is the first of two Place Projects to be shown at the Collective Gallery.

A wall painted in liquid gold and the gigantic skeleton of a sperm whale are among the exhibits shown by the two Scottish artists vying for the most prestigious award in contemporary art, the Turner Prize.

Lucy Skaer, Environmental Art graduate, is showing a work called Leviathan Edge, which is the partial skeleton of a male sperm whale, including its skull, visible through narrow slits in a wall.

Richard Wright, who specialises in wall paintings, has adorned a room at Tate Britain in London with a symmetrical pattern in gold leaf.

Making Space: toward a public artwork for Glasgow Women’s Library 2 Artist in residence opportunities

Deadline for applications: Friday 24 July 2009

Glasgow Women’s Library (GWL) seeks two 6-month part time Artist Residencies to be based within the library. The residencies offer an exciting opportunity for two artists to work with the rich resources of Glasgow Women’s Library - staff, learners, users and archive - to achieve the aims and focus of Making space: toward a public artwork for GWL. The residence opportunities are offered to develop ideas, visuals and participatory working methods that can inform GWL’s ambitions to realise a public artwork for their new premises at the Mitchell Library, Glasgow. The residencies will support the artists’ investigation of Women’s histories and representation in the Public Realm, as well as potential means of engagement and consultation with diverse constituents of GWL.

For further details please download a job description, cover sheet and application information from here or call GWL on 0141 552 8345 or e-mail: info(at)womenslibrary.org.uk

The Gibson Street Gala

The Gibson Street Gala will take place on Sunday 21st June from 12 - 6pm and I am inviting artists and art students to take part in an open air exhibition in Westbank Quadrant either as individuals or groups. A small fee of £15 would be charged for each section used by individuals or groups, within which work may be made available for sale. The art exhibition will be a new addition to the fifth annual incarnation of the event and we are hoping to establish it as a successful and permanent feature. The aim is to create an arts community site and encourage artists and art students to collaborate. This is a fantastic opportunity in terms of exposure and any additional creative ideas are welcome. We will have artists doing life drawing and I'm working on getting a performance artist to draw an audience. Gibson street, Westbank Quadrant and part of Otago street will be closed for 7 hours. We have live entertainment on the main stage in Gibson street throughout the day, kids entertainment in Otago street, 30 stalls across the bridge and a large courtyard(entry from Westbank Quadrant) with acoustic bands and other entertainment. We have space for more than fifty artists and I'm getting a lot of interest so if you would like a space guaranteed let me know as soon as possible. I can supply you with a table if you need one and we are looking into getting covers for work in case of rain but I would recommend artists to be prepared for that as well.

Lucy Skaer and Richard Wright shortlisted for Turner Prize

Two Scottish artists, one known for her intricate drawings, the other for his "thinking man's graffiti", have been shortlisted for the most prestigious, and controversial, award in contemporary art, the Turner Prize.

In a year in which the prize has taken on a noticeably more restrained air, Lucy Skaer (SEA graduate) and Richard Wright, who are both based in Glasgow and trained at the Glasgow School of Art, were yesterday on the final list for the £40,000 prize, £25,000 of which goes to the eventual winner, who will be unveiled in December. In-World: Second Life Studio – Exhibition and Project Opportunity!

SEA and CCE are looking for interest from students (and staff) in participating in a ‘real world/in-world’ exhibition. Funding from the GSA Learning and Teaching Innovation fund has allowed the purchase of an island in Second Life - an immersive 3D Virtual world – and with the support of Glasgow School of Art Graduates rm*, AKA Gaylie Runciman and Debs Norton, we are looking for people who would be up for experimenting with the site, contexts and processes of Second Life to:

• Build a body of work for a ‘real world/in-world’ exhibition
• Work with Glasgow School of Art Graduates rm*, AKA Gaylie Runciman and Debs Norton to explore the tools and contexts of Second Life as a site of production

This is a one off opportunity to test and show what’s possible in Second Life! It is anticipated that work made with rm* during the project will be exhibited in Second Life and also in a parallel real world space during April 2009. If you’re interested in taking part, please contact Paul Cosgrove Acting Head of Sculpture and Environmental Art by close of play on Friday 14th March and further information on meeting dates and project plans will be sent to you.

Survey

Thursday 5 March 7-9 pm

Exhibition runs Friday 6 March - Sunday 5 April, Tramway 5

Artist Talk Sat 21 March, 2pm

It is this property of music to form complex relationships across vast spaces that Campbell explores in the newly commissioned work Survey. In Starform 2007 the artist relinquished the role of performer to explore the sound lives of others, where elderly men gave private performances made public through their presentation in video projections. In Survey, these private spaces, the sites for rehearsal and performance bleed over from the domestic across stairways and through walls to interrupt and become the soundtracks for others. There is a sense of the local as themes and motifs are introduced and so begins a dialogue which orchestrates a narrative.
