Pedal Power - a commission for Stavanger 2008

I invite you all to follow my adventures in Stavanger, Norway. From 22nd-30th August, 3 pedal generators will be located around the city in various sites including schools, gyms, shopping centres and on the street. At the end of each day the energy stored in batteries will be harvested to power a lighting system for a pedestrian walkway beneath the city road bridge.
For more up to date information please see www.justincarter.info or www.justincarter.info/blog
See you all in September...best wishes, Justin

Cath Keay – 1000 Tides

Cath will be running a casting project with our first year students early next month. keep an eye on the blog and our Flickr site for images from the project.

Cath Keay’s doctoral project builds on her previous, long-running work on bees and wax sculpture to investigate ways in which art and the natural world can interact, exploring dynamic natural processes that can influence the final form of a sculpture. Keay’s sculptural works provide a basis for animal colonisation in natural environments (a wax architectural sculpture in a beehive; terracotta text sculptures in the sea); over time it is possible to investigate the way in which these animal forms adapt to and alter the artworks, creating beauty in nature’s response to human intervention. Her work highlights the role of nature as collaborator in the creation of the artistic product.

Mark Melvin

What can be seen in Mark’s work throughout is a preoccupation with the work as process, and in turn looping, sequence and rhythmic iteration have been prominent in their construction. Repetition is evident in his practice and he often experiments with various cycles and levels of repetition, be it a discussion of the habitual and routine, investigations into recollection and memory or the use of music, the art of iteration.

Nick Evans

The Glasgow-based sculptor Nick Evans’ recent solo show at Sorcha Dallas involved an unusual foray by the artist into almost total abstraction. Though the ‘Primitivist’ aesthetic of classical modernism had been strongly present in Evans’ past sculptures, his older works also incorporated conspicuous figurative elements (referencing Cubist-style nudes, for example). more
