Artists’ strategies for working in public - learning from practice

Wednesday 25 April
11.30am – 5.00pm
The Mackintosh Suite, House for an Art Lover, Bellahouston Park,
10  Dumbreck Road, Glasgow G41 5BW

The range of strategies, sites and locations in which artists make, interact and present work in public contexts are wide reaching - from urban cities to rural villages; from ‘official’ to ‘unofficial’ spaces such as galleries/museums to shop fronts, abandoned buildings and off-site spaces. The breadth of communities, commissioners or patrons and publics involved are equally diverse. What is this complex of relations; how might the different needs of artists, communities, commissioners or patrons, be understood, negotiated and represented; what can we learn from practice within these diverse contexts?

This event aims to explore these questions and more, through local, national and international examples and contributions from Lewis Biggs, co-curator Aichi Triennale 2013 and curator, Folkestone Triennial 2014; Professor Christine Biehler, artist, writer, and artistic director of LandArbeit, Germany; Henry Coombes, artist, one of six selected artists to represent Scotland at the The 52nd Venice Biennale, Palazzo Zenobio, Venice; JustinCarter, Shauna McMullan and Paul Cosgrove, artists and lecturers, Sculpture and Environmental Art, Glasgow School of Art

The event is Chaired by RayMackenzie, Art historian, and writer, author Public Sculpture of Glasgow

Tickets: £10.00 (Includes buffet lunch and tea/coffees) with post event drinks reception and viewing of Henry Coombes’ new film work commissioned by House for an Art Lover as part of GI’s Included Programme for2012, which is exhibited in the Sheds at the former stable block adjacent to the House.
