Karla Black: Tate Britain
"That's what sculpture can do, it can be a pure engulfment and
absorption in the material world, when you're not even aware of
yourself, when you have no self consciousness, and you're not being
watched and you're just purely absorbed in the material world. That is
the best possible kind of escape – when you are fully connected to
yourself.
"I think about art as a place to behave, as an escape, not just for me but for the people looking at it," says Black. more

Discussion Event: I am the architect, this is not happening, this is unacceptable
Artists’ strategies for working in public -
learning from practice
Wednesday 25 April
11.30am – 5.00pm
The Mackintosh Suite, House for
an Art Lover, Bellahouston Park,
10 Dumbreck Road, Glasgow G41 5BW
The range of strategies, sites
and locations in which artists make, interact and present work in public
contexts are wide reaching - from urban cities to rural villages; from
‘official’ to ‘unofficial’ spaces such as galleries/museums to shop fronts,
abandoned buildings and off-site spaces. The breadth of communities,
commissioners or patrons and publics involved are equally diverse. What is this
complex of relations; how might the different needs of artists, communities,
commissioners or patrons, be understood, negotiated and represented; what can
we learn from practice within these diverse contexts?
This event aims to explore these questions and more, through
local, national and international examples and contributions from Lewis Biggs, co-curator Aichi Triennale
2013 and curator, Folkestone Triennial 2014; Professor Christine Biehler, artist, writer, and artistic director of
LandArbeit, Germany; Henry Coombes,
artist, one of six selected artists to represent Scotland at the The 52nd Venice
Biennale, Palazzo Zenobio, Venice; JustinCarter, Shauna McMullan and Paul Cosgrove, artists and lecturers,
Sculpture and Environmental Art, Glasgow School of Art
