Art historians Deborah Lewer (University of Glasgow), Luke Skrebowski (University of Cambridge), John-Paul Stonard (Courtauld Institute of Art, London), curator Daniel Herrmann (Whitechapel Gallery, London) and writer Sarah Lowndes (Glasgow School of Art) examine Roth’s place in relation to art making in the twentieth century and his legacy for artists now.

*The title of the seminar is extracted from an ‘autobiography’ that Dieter Roth included in the book he made with Richard Hamilton, COLLABORATIONS OF CH. ROTHAM in 1977.

21 Revolutions: a GWL exhibition at the CCA

21 Revolutions: Two Decades of Changing Minds at Glasgow Women's Library

Glasgow Women's Library is a phenomenon, the sole resource of its kind in Scotland. To mark the Library's 21st birthday, it commissioned 21 women artists to make limited edition fine art prints inspired by its library, archive and museum artefact collections. Artists have created work that draws on sources including campaign badges, knitting patterns, Suffragette memorabilia, album covers, feminist newsletters and lesbian dime novels; a selection of these inspirational objects from the GWL collections will be included in the exhibition. The selected artists are:

David Sherry ‘I want to believe’

The performances in this exhibition are drawn from everyday situations. While appearing to be simple, sometimes even inconspicuous acts, they attempt to show the absurd, tragi-comical sides of daily life. The artists invite us to follow their lead and believe in their stories – or not.

‘I want to believe’ will take place on Saturday the 15th of September, 19.30hrs at NS16, NS-plein 16 in Tilburg. See you there!

Molly Russell: How a devilish dad inspired a pet project

Dearly Departed presents an intriguing series of twelve life-sized animal coffins, stretching from a 4.5 metre giraffe to a meerkat. The daughter of the late Ken Russell, Molly has created a highly ambitious exhibition about her childhood experience. more

Russell is spending a lot of time in a factory in Durham, where she is collaborating with coffin-makers J C Atkinson & Son of Tyne & Wear. "I thought of all the lovely sweet animals rather than snakes and tapeworms and how coffins could be made. It made it less sinister – a giraffe isn't a dark thing – so it became something more sweet." more

MLitt in Fine Art Practice at the Glasgow School of Art.

Masters of Letters are the students of the MLitt in Fine Art Practice at the Glasgow School of Art.  MLitt in Fine Art Practice is a 12-month postgraduate programme, in its inaugural year.  The MLitt is a practice-based taught programme, with four specialist pathways in painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture.  In this, its first year of running, 20 artists are enrolled.

Liz West: Shooting stars

More cheerful are Liz West's images. A tutor at Glasgow School of Art once told her that every photographic slide should look "like a jewel" – and hers certainly shine brightly. This is serious colour-blocking: the 27-year-old contrasts different masses of uniformly hued objects in a supermarket to make an aesthetic experience out of a consumerist chore. more

Andy Knowles

Round Town is the debut single from production team The Nice Nice Boys - aka Franz Ferdinand’s Nick McCarthy and Andy Knowles of Johnny Marr and The Healers. Their collaboration with up and coming hip-hop artist Marvellous Macc Mello is an unorthodox mixture of high-end indie pop and uncompromising UK hip hop. Recorded in McCarthy’s Sausage Studios and mixed at Abbey Road the single is released on McCarthy and Knowles’ label Meat Records. more

ArtWorks Scotland has produced a survey as part of the next stage of research, to capture information about artists career paths, their views on professional development requirements, and details about the skills, knowledge and qualities needed to work in participatory settings.

They want to reach as many artists as possible, across all art forms, who work in participatory settings. The survey will take about 15 minutes to complete, and respondents get the chance to win a new iPad, and other prizes.

Salon Art Prize

Over the past five years the Salon Art Prize has exhibited 428 artists and welcomed over 9700 visitors to our gallery in East London. To celebrate this success we will be moving to a larger gallery space to accommodate more artists per exhibition and will also offer an overall prize fund of £10'500. The Salon Art Prize supports Painting, Photography, Sculpture & Installation, and 2-D Media (Collage, Drawing, Printmaking etc.).

Artists’ strategies for working in public - learning from practice

The range of strategies, sites and locations in which artists make, interact and present work in public contexts are wide reaching - from urban cities to rural villages; from ‘official’ to ‘unofficial’ spaces such as galleries/museums to shop fronts, abandoned buildings and off-site spaces. The breadth of communities, commissioners or patrons and publics involved are equally diverse. What is this complex of relations; how might the different needs of artists, communities, commissioners or patrons, be understood, negotiated and represented; what can we learn from practice within these diverse contexts?

This event aims to explore these questions and more, through local, national and international examples and contributions from Lewis Biggs, co-curator Aichi Triennale 2013 and curator, Folkestone Triennial 2014; Professor Christine Biehler, artist, writer, and artistic director of LandArbeit, Germany; Henry Coombes, artist, one of six selected artists to represent Scotland at the The 52nd Venice Biennale, Palazzo Zenobio, Venice; JustinCarter, Shauna McMullan and Paul Cosgrove, artists and lecturers, Sculpture and Environmental Art, Glasgow School of Art

The event is Chaired by RayMackenzie, Art historian, and writer, author Public Sculpture of Glasgow

SSW is looking for a motivated individual, to work as part of our small team, and to be responsible for the implementation of an artistic programme that integrates with the best use of our facilities.

After the first fully functioning year since the capital development, the new role of Curator of Facilities and Programmes has emerged as an absolute necessity to better support our artistic programme. SSW is an institution that is reliant on infra-structure; accommodation for artists, studios and technical workshops and we require a dedicated person to ensure the smooth running of the facilities, and programmes.

This position will be responsible for overseeing the operational efficiency of SSW’s premises, ensuring the most effective use of SSW’s facilities and technical support for artists and communities. You will assist the Director in the delivery of the artistic programme (curated and facilities), lead on marketing and communications and documentation. You will also play a role in developing evaluation of SSW’s activities in such a way that will inform the future of how we develop this new and evolving programme.

3rd Year Sculpture Exhibition

SEA at Platform and the Bridge

A group exhibition featuring forth year students from Sculpture and Environmental Art. For the second time, Platform and The Glasgow School of Art have worked in collaboration to offer the unique opportunity for students to create site specific work. Over the past few months a selection of forth year students from the Department of Sculpture and Environmental Art have developed new art work in response to the architecture and function sites around Platform and The Bridge.

The show engages with the users of Platform in a variety of different ways, it places work in unusual locations within the building, challenging our expectations and perceptions of visual art. The exhibition will feature art works in the form of sculpture, film, projection, painting, projection, installation and text. Artists:

David Shrigley: Brain Activity - Exhibition Trailer

SSW Technical Placement, graduate opportunity

This is an opportunity for a recent art graduate to gain more practical experience and training in sculptural techniques and processes. Working alongside the Senior Technican, Technical Placement participants work as a valuable member of the SSW team, assisting artists achieve their desired outcomes, co-ordinating with SSW office staff in the delivery of programming, and assisting with the implementation of Health and Safety regulations. There is an emphasis on individual development and enuiry, and where possible Technical Placements will focus on the areas they most wish to address. As well as working and training alongside the Senior Technican, Technical Placement participants are expected to develop their own body of work while in residence. Participants will be provided with studio space and access to all facilities, which should be fully taken advantage of. more
