Sky Arts Ignition: Futures Fund – round three

The Sky Arts Ignition: Futures Fund will award five young artists (aged 18-30) £30,000 each to fund their practice for a whole year. Winners willalso be paired with a mentor from Sky to help them to develop their networks,skills and knowledge in the arts and the commercial sector.

The fund is open to applications from the following fields: Visual art: Including fine artists, sculptors, photographers, animators and video artists

Creative producing: Including creative producers and curators working in visual arts, theatre, film and performance/dance

Music: Including musicians,composers, songwriters and conductors

Performing arts: Including theatre-makers including playwrights, spoken word artists, directors, puppeteers and live artists Dance: Including dancers and choreographers

Insight & outlook

Insight and Outlook is an exhibition of artwork and writing from prisons, secure hospitals, secure children's homes and criminal justice services in Scotland. This inspiring collection of painting, drawing, sculpture and creative writing has been selected from entries to the 2012 Koestler Awards – which has been rewarding artistic achievement in the penal and secure sectors for 50 years.

The exhibition has been curated by young care leavers with guidance from Glasgow artist David Shrigley. The exhibition is kindly supported by The Co-operative and Paul Hamlyn Foundation.

Research and Residency Opportunity

Accidental Mix - Field-work 1: the participatory maker

This 6-month Artist research and residency opportunity forms part of an innovative collaboration between Queens Cross Housing Association (QCHA) and the Department of Sculpture and Environmental Art (SEA) at The Glasgow School of Art. Accidental Mix is envisaged as an ongoing series of artist opportunities that will explore how a diversity of creative methods might support means of engagement with communities in the development of art in a range of public, urban spaces.

Field-work 1: the participatory maker, is the first in that series and aims to support the artist to explore and test the role of making as a means of communication and engagement with some of the diverse communities that make up QCHA.  Supported by Creative Scotland, Public Art Research and Development investment funding, this 6 month residency will enable an artist-maker to form a key part of the Accidental Mix project team and offers an exciting opportunity to develop working methods through materials and process that test ideas of making as a means of participation in relation to Public Art. The artists’ research in this area will contribute to and support the development of a strategy for public art within QCHA.

A fee of £9,000 will be paid to cover the artist’s input over 6 months between the periods January 2013 to June 2013, with time input to be determined by the artist in negotiation with the project’s partners. Up to £5,000 for materials and community workshops is also available; the allocation will be agreed with the artist and the project team however will include artist’s materials and public presentation of their research and documentation, which is likely to be held in the Accidental Mix base in Queens Cross, Glasgow.

This residency is offered on a self-employed basis.

Applications are due by 9 November 2012 and interviews will be held in Glasgow on Friday 23 November 2012

CALL OUT: ARTSTORE FUNDED GROUP EXHBITION

As part of a new initiative to give back to the students of the Glasgow School of Art, the Artstore at the Artschool is pleased to  announce a new range of opportunities to coincide with the end of each term for students at the Glasgow School of Art.

This term, the Artstore will provide ambitious student projects funding and a space to exhibit outside the Glasgow School of Art. Applications are accepted only from registered students at the Glasgow School of Art. Applications for group exhibitions are given priority. Applications for solo exhibitions are generally not accepted but will be taken into consideration. Applications are accepted from any discipline (undergraduate and postgraduate) and we do not set parameters limit on material or method. However, applications with a focus on contemporary art practice are given priority.

Received Applications are selected by a panel of artists and creative practitioners based on the following criteria: the quality of individual work, the quality of the exhibition proposal, and the creative development it enables. The Artstore covers the cost of the gallery, installation equipment, publicity, invigilation, preview night amenities, and provides a small subsidy towards exhibitors’ costs. It is the responsibility of the selected artists to organise, install, and de-install their exhibition, all in line with the venue’s health and safety guidelines. *The title of the seminar is extracted from an ‘autobiography’ that Dieter Roth included in the book he made with Richard Hamilton, COLLABORATIONS OF CH. ROTHAM in 1977.

21 Revolutions: a GWL exhibition at the CCA

21 Revolutions: Two Decades of Changing Minds at Glasgow Women's Library

Glasgow Women's Library is a phenomenon, the sole resource of its kind in Scotland. To mark the Library's 21st birthday, it commissioned 21 women artists to make limited edition fine art prints inspired by its library, archive and museum artefact collections. Artists have created work that draws on sources including campaign badges, knitting patterns, Suffragette memorabilia, album covers, feminist newsletters and lesbian dime novels; a selection of these inspirational objects from the GWL collections will be included in the exhibition. The performances in this exhibition are drawn from everyday situations. While appearing to be simple, sometimes even inconspicuous acts, they attempt to show the absurd, tragi-comical sides of daily life. The artists invite us to follow their lead and believe in their stories – or not.

Molly Russell: How a devilish dad inspired a pet project

Dearly Departed presents an intriguing series of twelve life-sized animal coffins, stretching from a 4.5 metre giraffe to a meerkat. The daughter of the late Ken Russell, Molly has created a highly ambitious exhibition about her childhood experience. more

Russell is spending a lot of time in a factory in Durham, where she is collaborating with coffin-makers J C Atkinson & Son of Tyne & Wear. "I thought of all the lovely sweet animals rather than snakes and tapeworms and how coffins could be made. It made it less sinister – a giraffe isn't a dark thing – so it became something more sweet." more

MLitt in Fine Art Practice at the Glasgow School of Art.

Masters of Letters are the students of the MLitt in Fine Art Practice at the Glasgow School of Art.  MLitt in Fine Art Practice is a 12-month postgraduate programme, in its inaugural year.  The MLitt is a practice-based taught programme, with four specialist pathways in painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture.  In this, its first year of running, 20 artists are enrolled.

Liz West: Shooting stars

More cheerful are Liz West's images. A tutor at Glasgow School of Art once told her that every photographic slide should look "like a jewel" – and hers certainly shine brightly. This is serious colour-blocking: the 27-year-old contrasts different masses of uniformly hued objects in a supermarket to make an aesthetic experience out of a consumerist chore. more

Round Town is the debut single from production team The Nice Nice Boys - aka Franz Ferdinand’s Nick McCarthy and Andy Knowles of Johnny Marr and The Healers. Their collaboration with up and coming hip-hop artist Marvellous Macc Mello is an unorthodox mixture of high-end indie pop and uncompromising UK hip hop. Recorded in McCarthy’s Sausage Studios and mixed at Abbey Road the single is released on McCarthy and Knowles’ label Meat Records. more
