"These opinions and half facts are a brain storm about the use of degree shows as a Academic/professional/social opertunity, it is based on a Group show within 2008's E.C.C degree show, for details of the show and the group check the e.c.c degree site .

"the Show A******g, (part of the *********** masters/degree show show) is a great play how the art institution we work within so often becomes the infallible lens we work through, and the degree show a generic format of a desperately crowded stage or a bare bones yellow paper of isolated work.
An apropriate page from what seems to be A******g's manifesto (which has emphasis on leaving all names responsible without capital letters) goes :

Despite the many novel works at E.C.A`s show, you inevitably feel burnt out by the sheer volume of work that has decided to take the center stage, rather than be aware of what has essentially become an art version of a toy shop; Making works that say "Ive arrived", or "This is what I do!" and to whom are the works talking to?!;... Allot of mentally drained viewers who have tralled through the first 30 collections of idividual "artists", if not viewers just lost trying to find the exit for respite.

If anything, the main problem is that there all pitching , all trying to keep there heads above the mud that the few that grabed the fresh viewers, are stamping them into.

It is this lack of aspiring out with the conventions of the show that become most noticed, the viewer is constantly looking in, only to hear the banging from the next room waiting for there turn.

Much of the work at the E.C.A seemed to disregard the fact of its context, It naturally becomes a facet of the bigger situation that the viewer is in, the viewer is constantly drained into sympathizing with what the work seems to be trying to accomplish in its own little nook. there pitching there flights of fancy, with no real interest or articulation of the format there doing it in.

One group that responded to this however is the group show named A******* ;

A notice board billed with a quarter dozen copies of a pink poster depicting the dissected action of a revolver is pined uniformly to a notice board on the left of the entrance, there is a glass case beside it displaying the peace in real life, the peace instantly becomes the Icon. to you're right, there is a tall souvenir card stand filled with out with issues of the manifesto with the poster graphic as a cover, strait ahead is the entrance, you walk through into a new venue.

No longer in the degree show, you're viewing college students work (technically?) you're now in new space of authority you left the baggage at the door, but you're brains still burnt out. but you've just witnessed the most engaging gesture."

A Degree show should open up the situation of the students have found them selfs in.
Art is as much like a crufts champion as it is a anything, it should be awake. A degree show has nothing.

the degree show is an opportunity to do what the hell we like. it has huge potential and needs to be seen as a single project rather than a collection of works.

Art that neglects its Environment is working on a whim, it completes nothing in any vital way and might as well be in the pages of a magazine."
